Tauranga Sangam Netball

My netball dream is...

Who we are: The Tauranga Sangam Netball team is an amateur sports team that was created 1 year ago as an opportunity for a group of women to come together, exercise, bond and eventually compete in tournaments across NZ, Australia and Fiji. The original members of the team all have a connection to the beachside town of Tauranga and Sangam has cultural relevance as our team members are of South Indian decent. Coming together as a Tauranga Sangam team brings together two communities that we are all very proud to be associated with. Our Background: Our team is made up of women of various ages, fitness levels and different levels of netball experience. Since the formation of the team we have been training 2 – 3 times a week rain or shine, we have competed in multiple tournaments and have also began to enter different leagues to gain experience playing with a diverse range of teams. We have come a long way from a group of women who initially started playing to improve our health and fitness levels to a group of women who are now fitter, healthier and committed to the sport. We have had our challenges early on when we played in tournaments where we were very new to the sport and our losses were many, but it kept us motivated to improve, and every time we did better in terms of scoring regardless of whether we won or not it motivated us to push ourselves that little bit more. We tried out different positions, we challenged ourselves in the middle of winter to get through outdoor training, our young children often accompanied us and cheered us on as we trained early Saturday mornings but it all seemed worth it as we slowly began to draw on games and then started winning some. The excitement was real when we as a tea bought actual netball uniforms. 😊 This bought us together and we gained an identity, plus we won the best dressed award at the latest tournament we played in Hamilton. We as a team have been self-funding, we pay for coaches, court time, uniforms and we have even organised two cultural tournaments ourselves as part of fundraising efforts but also for an opportunity to bring teams within our community together and enable women to bond in healthy, fun environment. Having ANZ on our team would make a huge difference to us. We want to be able to compete in tournaments held in Sydney and Fiji in 2020 but to do that we need help to get us there. Not only assistance with travel and competition fees but also getting us ready to compete, this means training sessions that are effective and will increase our capability as a team. It means being able to pay for a coach to train us and not always trying to do it ourselves. We have in the past had a coach but we were unable to financially afford to do this on a regular ongoing basis. It also means being able to pay for indoor court time on those cold rainy days. We will be fundraising for our airfares and accommodation but any help from this grant would be appreciated.
