My netball dream is...
Te Aro School (Te Kura O Te Aro) is a small primary school in inner city Wellington. We have two netball teams. Our younger team is the Te Aro Phoenix team, with girls in year 4 and 5. There are twelve girls in the team, currently playing 6 a side in the Wellington West Netball tournament.
Some girls are in their first season of playing, some are their second. But the kicker is, although the girls are working really hard, they haven't yet won a game. As a manager, working with coach, we're trying hard to keep up their spirit and enthusiasm, but it's getting difficult! The girls really need a boost.
We have a range of abilities in the team, and because we want to have an inclusive approach, we make sure every player gets on the court for every game. We'd really like as many of these girls as possible to keep playing next year. The Te Aro Phoenix team includes girls whose families have recently arrived in NZ - from Ethiopia, from Bangladesh - and netball is such a great way to build community, connection and health for all these young girls.
We have worked around a lot of obstacles to keep these girls in the game. We have no netball court at school for the present, we have kids who need lifts to games, assistance with uniforms and so on. We can take care of all this, but we haven't been able to lead them to a victory on the court!
We believe some sessions of expert coaching and strategy input would both lift our girls' spirits, and improve their chances of winning a game before the season is finished. ANZ, can you organise a venue and a few coaching sessions for the Te Aro Phoenix team?
