Marian Catholic School AIMS Netball team
My netball dream is...
Having ANZ on our team will make a huge difference to the Marian Catholic School girls who are really looking forward to attending the annual AIMS week long netball competition for 2019. This huge event is held in Tauranga, which means that our team must fundraise for entry fees, umpire payment, travel, food and accomodation costs in order to be able to attend. Any monetary support we receive will help our families greatly, particularly our students who otherwise would be unable to participate.
This year our 12 strong team is made up largely of Pasifika and Māori students, alongside African, Columbian and European students from our very diverse community. During the selection process, these girls stood out not only because of their natural netball skills but their dedication to training and excitement around being a valued part of a team. Many of these girls are from large low decile families who will struggle financially to support their children to attend this event. While some of the girls selected currently play in A teams, others selected are not presently playing any weekend or other team sports. This is due to financial reasons, or church, family or community commitments. One player is a highly skilled swimmer and cross country competitor who is very excited about being part of a netball team for the first time with her friends.
The AIMS tournament opportunity will encourage the non-playing girls who demonstrate natural netball ability to develop a lifelong interest in netball, or sport. More importantly they will develop a range of lifelong skills simply from learning how to be part of a team. The hope is that these girls will go on to get involved in netball, or team sports, at their high schools next year. They are strong players, who will strengthen the sports teams of the High Schools they attend. Alongside fostering a love of netball, involvement in this tournament will help the players to develop in their personal fitness and health as they work to become fit enough to participate. Lunch time trainings have already seen the girls bonding, working together and being much more active than they normally are during these periods.
As a teacher at Marian Catholic School and the team’s coach, I have been involved in taking other teams to AIMs to participate in this massive event. The netball team this year is our most diverse yet, and also the most in need of financial support. Many of the girls selected were chosen regardless of whether they were financially able to participate. They are willing to wash cars, sell pizza for lunch, make soup for the teachers and hold a cultural performance to try to raise money for this event. As an extremely busy teacher, I am working to find time to support all fundraising endeavours. Any support that ANZ could give to make this job easier, and enable success for us to reach our fundraising goal of $5,800 (around $480.00 per child) would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for considering us.
