My netball dream is...
Please support the Ahipara School netball team to attend the 2019 AIMs Games in Tauranga.
Ahipara School feels that enabling its pupils to be involved in such a world class event is likely to be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Making the most of this opportunity, will not only help the students who participate, by broadening their horizons and ambitions, it will raise the aspirations of future students as well. However, being a small, low decile, rural school in an isolated part of NZ makes the costs of attending the event prohibitive for most. On top of this, due to legislative changes and school policy, we are not able to apply for grants for this purpose. Therefore we have a massive fundraising task ahead of us! Our main costs are travel ($2500 van hire) and accommodation ($3000) - that includes some of the layers sleeping on airbeds. Any contribution towards these costs would be greatly appreciated.
Here is a copy of last years Thank You letter. It provides a good description of what attending this event meant for our children. So would like to share that with you...
We are writing to thank you very much for supporting our fundraising efforts to get the Ahipara School Netball Team to the 2018 AIMS Games in Mt Manganui.
Getting a group of children from a small rural school, to participate in an event with over 10,800 athletes, a long way from home, is a massive undertaking, and we could not have done it without your support.
Our children represented our community with a huge amount of pride and were wonderful ambassadors for the Far North. They were frequently congratulated on their friendly, cheerful attitudes, along with their beautiful manners.
For the children, they struggled to comprehend that they were playing teams from schools with over 2000 Year 7&8 students. They witnessed many great things, and some not so great. All of which strengthened their resolve and personal pride in who they are and the values they stand for. During challenging times, two things can happen - you can either come together or blow apart. I’m pleased to say that these children chose to pull together and now have a very strong bond with each other. There were some tears of pain, exhaustion, frustration and plenty from laughter. The ability of these young people to show such amazing resilience and enthusiasm regardless of the task ahead was truly heart warming. Skills that will stand them in good steed for their futures.
Testament to how successful our trip was, came on the last morning, over breakfast, the children were commenting that they wished AMS went all year. Not bad, seeing they had played almost an entire season of netball in one week! Also, eight hours into the nine hour drive home, the Year7’s were asking if they could go again!
